A Surgical Treatment of Brachymetatarsia with Autogenous Bone Graft

Abstract
Brachymetatarsia, one of the rare congenital foot anomalies, is due to abnormally short metatarsal. It frequently affects the fourth toe and is more common in females. It may be produced by premature closure of the epiphysis of a metatarsal but
the
exact etiology is unknown. Most patients want correction of brachymetatarsia because o the cosmetic problem rather tan the functional one.
Though both conservative treatment and surgical correction can be used, lengthening of the abnormally short metatarsal with autogenous bone graft is the treatment of choice.
We experienced 4 cases of brachymetatarsia, 3 cases are bilaterally affected and 1 case unilateral. We lengthened the skin and soft tissue with V-Y plasty, lengthened the extensor tendon with Z-plasty and, performed horizontal osteotomy of the
metatarsal and interposing autogenous iliac bone graft. Postoperative result showed excellent outcome in aethetic as well as functional aspect.
We would like to present the detailed operative techniques and related bibliographical review.
